Both are important, but I feel like a lot of PE teachers don't stress competition enough... People should really strive to be physically fit and this requires some struggle on the part of students. My gym classes were a joke... If they were supposed to somehow make us healthy, they failed BADLY.

Unfortunately, many schools have opted away from any competitive activities, on the belief that the kids on the losing side will have their "self-esteem" damaged. The problem is-this is nothing like the real world where people have to compete. Likewise, by focussing on individual, non-competitive activities (like aerobics), kids are not learning to be team players. The two are not mutually exclusive. Kids need to be taught teamwork (cooperation) AND competitiveness.

I dont think so... A lot of kids arent built to play sports and some dont have an interest in playing any type of sport so it wouldnt be fair. For example my brother has flat feet and loves to play soccer but cant endure more than a quarter because he runs different from most people with arched feet. Also it wouldnt be fair to those who enjoy playing sports to be forced playing with those who hate it, it would ruin the whole entire experience. We should just stick with the required credits to graduate such as gym and courses in school. Sports just add a better look on the resume and it should stay that way in my opinion. Dont get me wrong I love sports... Ive done track, cross country and soccer for school but still dont think you should be required to play one. Thats what gym is for.
