What color shoes do you wear with black dress shorts?

The shorts are golf-like but they are dressy and can be worn out with a nice shirt. I am not sure if brown shoes would be alright.

You definetly wear black, never, ever brown. If you have shoes the same color as your top then that works. There's an old saying in fashion designing Black and brown should not be found. or for that matter no other primary color with brown. Have you seen the movie 'Kinky Boots' thats is what you should be wearing.

Depends on the brown--If you're not into shoes so much, a pair of sandals in a neutral soft colour that blends with your natural skin tone would be a good choice so you can wear them with a lot of other things. In my opinion, black shoes with black shorts can be too much, and, if you're not very tall, it can make you look shorter...Another idea, is to wear a colour that accents or "matches" your jewellery/accessories...something strappy would be cute...However, I would recommend staying away from ankle wrap/strap sandals, since they will make your legs look shorter with that style of shorts. I have some little cotton Mary Janes from the local Asian grocery that go great with EVERYTHING, even when they start to go a little ratty. They're feminine enough to pair with a dress, but won't murder your feet like most dress shoes since they have more give. They come in all colors, some even have embroidery!

Depending on the shirt colour. But you can never go wrong with black shoes with black shorts (I can't call them dress shorts because golf-like shorts aren't dressy, they're just not as casual as some others).

My stepmom always told me (and she knows fashion) to not wear any shoes lighter than your hemline color. (Don't wear any shoes lighter than black in your case. White would be a no no.)

black or match/compliment a color in the shirt. not brown unless the shirt has both black and brown... fabulous heels or pretty ballet flats. no mid-height heels. and dress shorts in general... i kinda question the idea... but i'll trust you that they are cute.
