It means to think about what your doing before you do it. Let yourself cool down after someone wrongs you, so that you wont make a decision you will later regret. Once you've had time to cool off a bit you can think rashly about what to do next. I think what ppl ment it to mean is to not seek revenge at all but if you think about it it most clearly means to give yourself time to calm down before reacting.

It's in the words.
If you are going to take revenge then allow your emotions to calm down, lose their heat.
Think about it.
If you choose to take revenge after a cooling off period, then it is considered, thought about, even savored before it happens.
So that, if and when it does happen, it is all the more appreciated.

Revenge isn't the best thing.

A modern adaptation could be, "Revenge is a day old donut"...

It's just not worth it, and you'll end up regretting it.
