hey i totally understand wat u talking about man. n boo to e other gal, to say pple over-analyze things to death. it's not over-analyzing, is thinking beyond wat others seldom think of, n that's a good thing man.
smart to me is e power to connect knowledge n ur own skills together, while intelligent is just, a lot of knowledge in ur brain. others may mix it up, coz not everyone can understand e difference, but if u understand, tat's all tat matters.
it's like been street-smart is to understand e rules on e road, n to avoid urself in accidents. there's no such thing as street-intelligent, but if there were to b a meaning to it, it'll be like to know e rules on e road, n stayed at knowing it, no matter how e surroundings change around u, ur behaviour will not change to fit in.
but nonetheless, when someone compliments u, whether it's smart or intelligent, just say "thanks", tat's all u need to do.

Traditionally the words are and have been interchangeable. Perhaps you are confusing intelligence with education. There are many who are educated beyond their understanding or intelligence. There are many who are very ignorant and yet are very intelligent. Smart is and adjective describing a high degree of intelligence. Intelligence is merely a vague description of mental capabilities. Usually when someone is described as being intelligent it is with the meaning that a person has good or high mental capabilities sometimes in general and sometimes when compared with a specific population.

I think there is a difference. You can be book smart, or street smart. Being intelligent I think means that you are smart in every kind of way....with common sense added, it's a bonus for sure.

The words are interchangeable in the broader sense of their definitions. What you need is to have an operational definition for each term.
