My favorite contemporary poet is Dean Young. He doesn't really deal with political opression but there are definitely imagery and metaphors there, if you need something to analyze. His writing is so energetic and passionate. I'd highly recommend all his books!

I can't tell you any off the top of my head, but go to the library and check out some issues of Atlantic Monthly (which regularly features poetry). I think the New Yorker also has poetry.

It seems like political oppression would get a lot of words these days, but maybe poets are in denial. Or the people who buy poetry . . . .

Check out the poet Antler and his poem "Factory". Here's an excerpt:

"The machines waited for me.
Waited for me to be born and grow young,
For the totempoles of my personality to be carved,
and the slow pyramid of days
To rise around me, to be robbed and forgotten,
They waited where I would come to be,
a point on earth...."

He's an interesting poet!

in the spirit of trying to narrow the search, I'm pretty sure it isn't me. I would have misspelled half the words in your question.
