My opinion on the ACLU is that they will take any perversion of justice and morality they can find, especially if it only benefits a very small segment of society, and fight for it tooth and nail.
You can thank them for defending such organizations as NAMBLA. Wow, now there is a worthy cause.
As far as an answer to your two questions.... look it up to get their spin on what they do:

"Roger Nash Baldwin became head of the National Civil Liberties Bureau (NCLB) in 1917. An independent outgrowth of the American Union Against Militarism, the Bureau opposed American intervention in World War I. The NCLB provided legal advice and aid for conscientious objectors and those being prosecuted under the Espionage Act of 1917 or the Sedition Act of 1918. In 1920, the NCLB changed its name to the American Civil Liberties Union, with Baldwin continuing as its director. Helen Keller, Jeannette Rankin, Jane Addams, Crystal Eastman and Albert DeSilver, along with other former members of the NCLB, assisted Baldwin with the founding of the ACLU.[1]"
Goals: The American Civil Liberties Union stands for a great deal. Their goal is to protect people from being denied the fundamental rights granted to every man and woman. Many issues focus on the First amendment, due process, and the Fourteenth Amendment.

In the year of its birth the ACLU was formed to protect aliens threatened with deportation, along with U.S. nationals threatened with criminal charges by U.S. Attorney General Alexander Mitchell Palmer for their communist or socialist activities and agendas[6] (see Palmer Raids). It also opposed attacks on the rights of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and other labor unions to meet and organize."

The ACLU is “engaged in trying to eliminate every vestige of Judeo-Christian expression in public places in America,” Kupelian explained in his landmark book, The Marketing of Evil: How Radicals, Elitists, and Pseudo-Experts Sell Us Corruption Disguised as Freedom, according to a review by Agape press. “It's frightening -- and they are using our tax dollars to do this. They use the laws of the land to get American taxpayers to spend their hard-earned money, actually financing their own destruction.”
The ultimate goal of the ACLU is to see an America “with little or no public vestige left of religious faith and the traditional family,” according to the Alliance Defense Fund’s Alan Sears and Craig Osten, who wrote the book, The ACLU vs. America.

ACLU is like Peta and many other organizations. They were founded with good intentions, and are based on such but somewhere along the line they have lost their way, went too far and become corrupt.
