There are actually different type of 4 wheel drive: full-time 4 wheel drive, all wheel drive, and part-time 4 wheel dirve. Two wheel drive is when only two wheels, or one axle, is powered, whether it be a rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. Most sports cars tend to be rear-wheel drive, it gives a different feeling that car enthusiasts really enjoy. Full-time 4 wheel drive is when all 4 wheels are in constant motion. All wheel drive is interestingly different. Although all four wheels work together, sometimes some wheels receive more power than others. This is done through differential locks. These differ from the ones that are found on full-time 4 wheel drive cars. They are automatically activated on all wheel drive cars. Part time 4 wheel drive must be activated, which means only 2 wheels work until the driver activates the 4 wheel drive.

Two wheel drives are usually droven by putting the power in the engine in either the back 2 wheels or the front 2 wheels.A four wheel drive would be easier for going off-road because the wheels have evenly exported the power in all 4 wheels.

2 wheel drive indicates that only 2 of the wheels drive the differential mechanism. 4 wheel drive indicates that all four wheels are operating on the same differential system and giving equal torque. Just a guess. Let's see what the guys have to say.

In two wheel drive, only two wheels actually "push" the vehicle; it may be the two in the front, or the two in the back, depending on the type of vehicle. In four wheel drive, all four wheels drive the vehicle; this is especially useful when it's slippery, and allows the one set of wheels to propel the vehicle even if the other has lost traction or has poor contact with the road surface.

A 2 wheel drive vehicle is moved by 2 wheels, and the other 2 just follow (in front wheel drive cars), or are basically pushed (in rear wheel drive cars).
A 4 wheel drive vehicle...all wheels move independantly.

A two wheel drive is two tires engaged through your powertrain and the four wheel drive is powered through your powertrain to include a transfer case. Transfer case allows all four tires to turn simutaniously....without the transfer case you could only turn/control two wheels at one time.
