Currently our HP ML150 (G1) server is running, as Sybase Database server with OS as RedHat.

The capacity of this server is
Xeon 2.8 Ghz/533 Mhz
4 x 256MB PC 2100 DDR SDRAM (Max 12 GB)
512KB Level 2 Cache
Intel E7501 Chipset
Intel Xeon 2.4 Ghz/533 Mhz System Bus Speed
36GB 10K Ultra320 Hot Plug HDD
2nd Processor kit option 2.8Ghz for ML150 Only
PCI Slots (2 x 64bit 133/100 Mhz PCI-X Slots, 2 X 64bit Mhz 1 X)

In order to boost the server performance we are planning to upgrade by adding 2nd processor and increase the RAM to 4GB. (This server is dual processor capable and the RAM upgradeable to 12GB)

Is it true that by adding more RAM and adding 2nd processor, will it improve the server performance as well as increase the Cache memory?

HP Confirmed the above parts are still available in the market

Is it wise to upgrade or purchase a newer server with dual processor?

You will see an enormous increase in performance
by adding another CPU & going to 4MB of RAM.

DEFENITELY the upgrade is a smart choice.....
so long as the workload on the server has not grown
too too high since originally put in use.

Get the parts from HP & do the upgrade.
Update the extended warranty as well.
For businesses this is a must....next day service at least.

That's what servers are all about .... reliability & scalability.

Upgrade. Going new will add all the expense and time of setting up a new one, second the upgrades you said should be enough to help. And the biggest, you already know how to admisitrate what you got. max out your servers optional upgrades. You should see enough boost to be worth the savings.

Make sure you get the exact kind of processor that is installed already. If not, I have seen this become problematical.

I am sure that this will boost your server's performance - however understand that it is possible not all applications that are running on your server are dual processor compatible.
