I don't think either one. The concept was probably used for quite some time before it was considered to be math. For instance recipes, people back in the day probably didn't calculate what the measurements were for bread but have been making bread for just about ever. Only recently did we begin to study mathematics and really discovering what can be done with it. Between the two I think it was probably discovered.

Mathematics is a process of thinking, which means learning, so it wasn't invented or discovered, but rather a subtle mixture of both.

I believe that mathematics is invented, because it did not exist before the applicatons of humankind. Mathematical principles and formulas etc. were created by mathematicians. True, they were based on connections between amounts of elements in a certain organization, but previously it did not exist in nature. In essence, the universe itself is like the opposite of mathematics. Mathematics is based on organization, categorizing, and collectiveness. However, in the natural universe, it is easier to create chaos than it is to create organization. Things naturally want to fall apart. This is called entropy. So, therefore, while mathematic is about ordering things, nature wants to break it apart.

mathematics was invented because the entire number system was invented by the first person to use it.
for something like mathematics to be discovered, it had to of been invented by someone (or something) in the past

It was neither. It was started by the ancient Sumerians (probably). They needed to measure land to restore property boundarys after floods. It started simple then grew.
