What an excellent idea! Afer all, if they truly claim to represent the "people", they should be happy just having the power to make laws, instead of getting tenures.

If you add up all the money and services all members of the government get it is only a small percentage of all the money spent . Salary for 10,000 people at say 300,000 a year is only 3 billion .
It only cost 15,000,000 to print that much money so as long as we can print more why worry . Thats about double what the actual pay is but it includes medical dental and retirement . See I am for inflation and lots of it .
See they have to pay enough for people to live on . So it makes rich people poor not poor people poorer .
Poor people have nothing to lose .
The rich hate inflation more then the poor . Money is worth less . Thats why you need to be paid more .

Think about it . 40 years ago people made 10,000 a year and that was good money . You could by a house for 20,000 in most places in america .
those making 8000 a year where close to those making 10,000 but but the few who made 100,000 where well off .
if they retired 30 years ago with 400,000 in the bank today they are broke .
So inflation hurts the rich . It eats up their savings and keeps people from being Idle and none productive .

Since minimum wage is such a good income for those just starting out then first term elected officials should start at that wage because they really know nothing about the job .

Seriously; my rules if I were king.
1) No attorneys could hold an elected office.
2) No elected officials or their (parties) could accept ANY donations.
3) They would be paid their salary but no be allowed to increase their worth beyond what that salary would allow.
4) They would have all of their living expenses paid for (house, food, medical, clothes, etc) so they could just save their salary.
5) They would be stood against a wall and publicly shot dead for committing treason. Treason would consist of lying to, cheating, stealing from the American public.
6) All politicians running for office would be given a set amount of money to run with, that would be it. No private funding, no donations, no contributions.

What do you think?

SoftTsoul; I I really hope that you live to be 70 and your plan goes through. 35% of the money paid out of social security goes to the elderly; the elderly that paid into all of their lives. The average pay out is $986 a month! Where does the rest go? Much goes to pay other "bills" like illegal aliens with anchor baby's (average payout $1480 month). I have to tell you, know nothing cra* that's spouts off shi* from their pie hole really sickens me. Yeah, you deserve you wish only I hope it doesn't happen until you hit retirement age. OF course retirement age does keep going up, for most within 10 years of retirement it's 67. And oh, it's Medicare for SSI, Medicaid is the Welfare medical and yes, it's also paid out of the social security bucket. May your momma kick you out of you video game playing house after she reads your post.

No.... But I do agree that it should not be so lucrative, except for the President, after they leave office. Let me explain:

The President should be fully compensated for life and given life benefits once he leaves office. He held the highest position in the nation.. hell the world for that matter.

But, as for Congress and the rest of our elected leaders, I say when your term is up you are done. Kiss the government teet good by. You did your public service, were compensated while in office and had a good or bad run. Now, go get a job like the rest of America.

Sure why not. They seem to think most Americans living beyond their means - Let's see how well they can survive on it. Take away all their benefits or they have the same as "the average American". Those over 60 go on their wonderful Medicare and Medicaid program. Up their retirement age to 70 so that they too have to work longer before they are able to enjoy their golden retirement years.

That would get the minimum wage up to about $150,000 per year in just one session of Congress. A great idea.
