First of all you have to figure out what series, or what kind of coins you are really interested in. Then you buy a book about them and read it. Try to find a dealer who has a lot of the coins you are interested in. You will get more to look at, plus the prices will be cheaper, then if you went to a dealer who only had a few. You need to know your coins, before going to on line auctions. Remember there is a difference between a coin collector and a coin accumulator, just as there is between a coin collector and a numismatist.. A bunch of old coins with no idea of what you want to do, is just a pile of old coins and people lose interest after a while. Filling holes in albums and putting sets together makes you a collector, but to be a numismatist, you must also study the coins and know the history about them. Most numismatists have a nice library of coin books, some have more books than coins. Remember collecting coins is considered The King of hobbies, but I think it got this title due to the fact, in times of old, only King's and royalty could afford to do it. It sounds good though. Hope this helps, glad to answer any questions on coins and related items.

Try local coin shops, attend coin shows or find a local coin club. All this type of information is available at money.org (American Numismatic Association web site).
