Right now I think Merriman is but in a couple of years it will be Sean Taylor of the Redskins. Once the guy officially cleans his act up he will be known as the best defensive player in football. This is coming from a Cowboys fan. No homer here!!!!

Champ Bailey. As a shutdown corner, he can literally allow the rest of the defense to focus on the other half of the field while at the same time taking away the opponents best receiver. This is what made the Dallas defense seem so good when they had Deion.

Julius Peppers, hands down. He is one of the best ends in the game, and its almost impossible to shut him down unless you double team him. Yes, there are plenty of players that can do the same thing like Freeney. But what makes him the best is his versatility. He can drop back and play pass coverage better than most linebackers, and he's even played defensive back a few times at the goal line. His size, speed, tenacity, he is just that good. Plus, its hard to find linemen that can literally outrun backs and receivers.

Lights Out all the way. No one is even close to his speed, athleticism and leadership.
I do agree that Gross-man is up there...but then again, you could say the same for Brooks & Walters & many of the QB this year.

I think the best defensive lineman is Julius Peppers. The best linebacker in the league is Brian Urlacher. The best defensive back is Champ Bailey.
To choose one defensive player as the best I would have to say that Brian Urlacher is the best defensive player.
