a certain descriptiveness and a good imagination.

The only real reason I can think of is that we the people get emotionally involved with a fictional character is that we want to have some escapism in our lives and these characters provides it for us. If you have seen the great Hitchkock film, "Rear Window" about the James Stewart character spys on all of his neighbors as a peeping tom, that we do with these fictional characters, we the peeping toms in their lives and we really enjoy it so much that we actually believe these fictional characters are very real and we can live our lives through them. That is my answer why we are affected emotionally by fictional characters.

Not at all I'm the same. I find that if I really like the character it is because I make link between them and a person in reality I was close to. In mourning the character I grieve for people who have passed on that I loved. It really just shows you care and have emotions like any other human being does.

because we find something similar with them in our lives or minds. They are made by some kind of patern. Because we are all human and some conditions like love, hate, pleasure, welfare, misery and many others are common for many of us.
Also such movies and books reveal something that we have as possibility and develop it. We live throught it because it reveals our inner selves.
They are not fictional at all. They exist in us. Throught such books and movies we see who we really are: lovers, heroes, masters, selfish beings, good people, monsters, saviours and sinners. Are such qualities and harsh things exist in us and when we read such books and watch movies we reveal such possibilities.
it is like circle of healing: everybody is talking about his or her own problems but we are all cured. But let us do not go so far: observe the Yahoo Answers: we can all find that some questions are similar to our life and we answer to them. If they were not similar, then they would not be so interesting to answer.

Because we want what they are offering or what they have. Most of us aren't happy with our lives for one reason or another then we read or see some fictional character doing what we want to. It creates all kinds of emotions and longings for everyone who reads or watches. That's the mark of a good movie or book; how you feel when you are finished with it. Good question!!

Because we are able to identify and relate ourselves with them and their situation.
A good author will give good detail on the character's background, and the more we see ourselves like them, just as a mirror, we become attached. Sort of like a best friend, the more we get to know [about] them, the stronger the bond.

Because we can identify with the characters
Because the subject is something that we have strong feelings about
Because we allow ourselves to become a part of the story
Because we are human beings with powerful emotions

A great author or screenwriter makes that possible. They make their characters real and believable - the good and the bad. The actions of the characters, and great descriptive work, makes us have real feelings for them.

well, sometimes it depends on YOU-The reader, Example, when i was little, i would love the blonde princesses, because simply, i'm BLONDE. You can easily fall in like with characters like you. But, it ALSO depends on the writer. Good writers know how to relate YOU to the character.
but just keep reading!!!

Plain and Simple: I'd say many of our reactions to such things are based on our own experiences, plus fueled by our imagination. So, we recollect on something that gets triggered in our mind, and there you go. Emotional Reaction.
