I recently received a peach color notice saying Sorry We Missed You! We Redeliver for You. The date said 3/19 which was Monday and it said available for Pick-up After: 3/20 and that means I pick up my item on the 21st, which is today. I didn't pick up the package today so I was thinking of going there tomorrow. I went to usps.com to schedule a redelivery but it told me that my item was returned to sender. I was sitting there thinking that it was impossible that my item was already returned w/o even giving me at least 1 full day to retreive my item. I don't know if that is an error online or what... but if it's really true then I will probably complain to post office.

Does anyone know how many days does USPS keep unclaimed items or had any similar experiences like this? Thanks for reading.

The unclaimed item must remain until there is evidence that you cannot claim it and it must not be return to the sender immediately. There must be a verification made at your address that you cannot claim the item.

I am a letter carrier.

If you received a postal form 3849 in your mailbox on the 19th there is no way that they should have returned it already. If they did they are incompetent. The problem is probably that you are dealing with the computer. Call 1-800-ASK-USPS. On the phone you will talk to a live human. Tell them the situation. There is obviously a mistake.

When you receive the 3849 slip, the post office will hold the parcel, letter etc. for about two weeks. You should also receive another one in the interim, in about 5 days, if you don't go to the post office after getting the first notice. On the second notice they will tell you the return date of the item.

I'm sure the item is at your local post office. Don't worry.

Just go to the PO and pick it up. I have been a week late several times due to being out of town and they were still there. May not be the same every place but at least a few days.

When you're filling the online form out, enter the 'redelivery request date' first, and then enter the 'first delivery attempt'. even if it isnt accurate because its later than the actual first attempt (go as far as you can without getting the error message,) they'll get the request and redeliver.
