The best place for this kind of information is found at the Death Penalty Information Center, www.deathpenaltyinfo.org.
On the homepage, you will find a link (left side of the page, I think) to the history of the death penalty, going back to about 1800BC.

Dear That Guy: Death penalties have been around ever since man started walking upright. Drawing and quartering is my favorite form of execution.
One thing that I always find interesting is the amount of knowledge a Roman Catholic priest has about crucifixion, the preferred method of execution by Romans and Jews in Biblical times. I guess it's because it's basically how their job got started. Talk to a priest and he can give you lots of background to it. For instance, the main cause of death in crucifixion is not blood loss, but asphyxiation. I didn't know that till I heard it from a priest.

The Code of Hammurabi, about 1760 B.C., is one of the oldest set of laws.
As to formof execution, pick one. It has only been in the last few centuries that a "humane" form of execution has been looked for.
In ancient times they used stoning, clubbing, throwing off a cliff. By the time of Christ, you find beheading, impalement, crucifixion, and burning alive. Into the Medieval period you can add hanging, drawing and quartering, and simply being tortured to death.
The bottom line is if there is a way of killing someone, it has probably been used as a method of execution at some point.

for those of you that read the bible then human sacrifises have been around since adam and eve. Since the begining.
It started when man was food for some of the other wild animals around. Just as some of the apes today are food for big cats and other animals.
Man killed to eat meat as well and most likely he killed those much like himself in the begining.
Look on the web for 16th century torcher machines. Sure had plenty of them at that time.

They started with Og, the caveman. He used a rock, I think.
