Do Japanese tolerates concubines or "other women"?

They say that Japanese culture is generally polygamous, not monogamous. Is this true or not?

There was a Japanese prime minister who resigned simply because of the gossip that he had a mistress. I guess, this tells enough that Japanese society do not tolerate concubines. Japanese laws also do not allow bigamous marriages. This implies that Japanese culture is monogamous. How about Japanese men having concubines or other women? Well, culturally speaking, Japanese society is male-dominated and would want that. But still, women would not like it. That is why, Japan has divorce. So, it wont be possible for a legal wife and other women stay in the same house.

Japanese, as a socitey, are monogamous. Although, there are many concubines in Japan. Concubines are not accepted as a society, but may wives do tolerate other woman.

All culture share the same human weaknesses, some are just more tolerant, Japanese is a male dominanted culture so it is more tolerated there

I know that many years ago, a marriage was for family, household care and heirs. It wasn't uncommon for wives to pack condoms for their husbands when they went away on business.

I would say that the thinking behind that was that a marriage was about mutual respect and the running of a household, so that would make a lover about desire and passion. The one does not threaten the other, so there's no problem.

from what I have heard it is genraly accepted..There were people called geishas wich were seen as friends to the wives but that was some time ago
