The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and temperance. Does the person in question display this fruit (which is Christ) in his/her life? Is this person's life transparent enough for you to even know the answer to this? If the answer to either of these questions is "no," then you should probably run away. A big one for today is temperance. If you're being "fed" by a person wearing expensive clothing and big diamond rings and telling you that you too can be as prosperous as they, if only you will "sow" into their ministry, then this is one of those ravening wolves. This person considers "godliness" to be a means of gain (that is, profit). That may sound ridiculous, but I've seen and listened to men like this, in person -- not on television. I used to attend a mega-church in Florida, and this sort of thing wasn't even unusual. Avoiding being deceived is actually dead easy. Listen to the Holy Spirit. Don't dismiss Him because He's saying something your pastor would disagree with, either. If you have a check in your spirit, if you feel uncomfortable with something that's being said and/or done, research it in scripture. Get the context (and I don't mean a couple of verses before or after. Often the context is an entire story, chapter, even an entire book or epistle. It involves knowing who was speaking, why, to whom, and in what circumstances. What was he talking about when he said the particular passage being referenced? If you find that scripture doesn't support what's being said or done, don't just assume you don't understand the scriptures. You are a child of God and quite capable of hearing the voice of the Spirit of God. The tricky part is to listen and take Him seriously.
