Our elecrticity bill at home has skyrocketed lately, and I was wondering if my computer usage could be the cause. My neighbors bill is half of what mine is and our houses are identical! Anyway, my wife says it's because i'm always downloading music and stuff causing the computer to use more energy. I think this is B.S. ....but I could be wrong. Your input would be appreciated!

It might consume a little more energy but its doubtful it would be noticable!
TO the idiot with the thumbs down rating on my answer, I have been in the electronics field for 30 plus years! Am A certified tech and yes, it will consume more power due to the processor and ram working harder than usual! Like I said tho, it wouldnt be noticeable. Who ever you are, you probably couldnt fix a sandwich let alone change a battery in a flashlight!

the computer is going to use some energy but very little. it would use around the same amount as a security light that stays on all night .have you recently got any other things such as fish tanks and such. i have 4 computers that are on pretty much 24/7. also i have a saltwater fish tank with a couple sets of 175watt MH lights plus pumps going. it uses more than the computers monthly combined. i did some reasearch on something like this when i school years ago and it turned out that the crt monitors used more power when left on than the computer itself. sounds weird but that is where most of the power went. the new lcd don't use nearly the power or get hot. usally when something is warm is when it uses more power. don't worry, it's not the computer running up the bill. something in your household has changed to use more power...

Your comp does use energy, but double is a little steep. check your furnace and water heater to see if there are any problems.

Your neighbours also might be using energy smart techniques to cut their bills,
like:
1. Turn off the heat/air con when you go to work.
2. Put lower flow shower heads in your bathrooms.
3. Only do laundry and dishes when the machines are full.
4. The dryer uses a lot of energy, so an energy star drying machine can save a lot of energy.

I download tons of stuff and our electricity bill is never affected by it. I've never heard of no such thing. Maybe your wife just doesn't want you on the computer so much ??
