I have a 1998 FWD eclipse with 16" rims. Two tires are 225/50/16's and the other two are 205/45/16's. Since I have FWD would I get more traction and power with the bigger tires on front? Or would that disrupt the car's performance and make it look really awkward? Thanks.

Update, the 205's are slightly smaller than stock if I remember correctly and the 225's are about stock size. It's a 5 spd Manual. So should the 225's go in the front? the car came w/ 195/70/14's

Yes, that way you are always driving downhill so this will save gas.

In a FWD car, you can put larger tires on the rear of the car, as long as the tires on the front of the car are the correct size for your car. If they are larger in the front than they are supposed to be, the speedometer will be off since it is run by the tranny. You don't get more power or traction by putting a bigger tire on a car anyways. Traction depends on tread pattern, road conditions, and the temp of the tire. Smaller tires stay warmer longer and will stick to the road better. If by FWD you mean front wheel drive, than your question has been answered. If you have an all wheel drive car, all 4 of the tires must be the exact same size in order to not put too much wear on the diffferentials of the axles or transfer case.

First I have to ask Why do you want to do this.. Second the 45 is a lower tire then the 50 so more weight would be in the front. since all the weight is in the front of this car anyway I can only see disaster. The car manufactures spend tons of money on research why second guess them? I would look up the optional tire size on this car and go with it.. www.tirerack.com is the best source.. I race against cars like yours.. Bigger tires (taller) should be in the back it will also change your speedometer calibration if you use a size thats not recommended for the car. Can also effect the cars speed sensor and may make an automatic trans car shift at the wrong points

Larger tires on a FWD car might help a little with acceleration but hurt handling because you turn with the front wheels, and larger tires can't rotate very well. That's why I prefer RWD over anything.

it may not look as muscular as a car with bigger tires on the back but then again if you put the bigger tires on the back you would lose performance. take this picture of a drag civic as an example
