Hey there! I have an old 1994 Chevy Corsica and it's been literally nothing but problems since I got it in June from my grandfather. Just recently it wouldn't start for me, my father came home and really reefed on it and it started. I was told that was blocked spark plugs, got a whole new set, no problem now.

For the past 2 weeks or so, the car has been squealing. It's not very consistent though. Doesn't do one time and then the next it's awful. My grandpa thought it was the belt, then determined it wasn't. Then said maybe it was a leak in the exhaust, but after hearing it said it couldn't be. His final guess as he listened was something to do with the power steering box, but he says it makes no sense as to why it doesn't do it as the wheel is turned. It does it lightly while sitting idle and then worse as more pressure is added to the gas. Any ideas at all as to what it could be?? I just hate the sound of it and I know it's not supposed to be doing that. Thanks in advance

Just wanted to let everyone know that I did get new power steering fluid put in with no changes. Also got some belt dressing and sprayed it on, and it only worked literally for about 6 seconds before the squeal returned

Another added note here...I had the belt on the alternator and such replaced yesterday and it's still squealing. Everyone seems to be at a loss

Sorry for so many added notes. I just need to keep adding them as I get more reponses. I had a new alternator put in about 2 months ago.

Some times the air conditioner pump starts to go bad and this will cause a squeal. It works on a clutch system. But you may want to check your tensioner pulley. Sorry don't have more without hearing it myself.

Could be a pulley locking up. This will eventually cause the belt to break. Take it in and have it checked. Should not cost much. Check the power steering fluid level, spray the belts with belt dressing and see if this fixes it. If it does have the pulleys checked just to be on the safe side.

With the additional info you posted I do believe, without being able to actually hear it myself, it is more than likely a pulley. One of the wheels the belt winds around, some enable it to be adjusted some are there just as a guide and are not adjustable. If one is locked up or in the process of locking up it will make the belt squeal. Its a bit more expensive than just changing a belt about $250-$300. One other possiblility is the entire front suspension with regards to the steering. Check the pulleys first then take it to an alignment shop.

first, the old serpentine belt was stretched.
second ..is a common mistake to mesure the old belt and pick the new one ,
go to the same auto part store ,ask for the belt by the car year, once You have the right belt give them the new-used You actualy have.

the belt squeal because is ,just a little bit, loose.
and/or the belt tensioner is faulty.

Watch you pulleys as the car is running only Three things can make that sound. first Belts Second are you ready for this.

Bearings in your alternator are shot From to much belt tension.
Or the ac pump is seized. to check ac remove that belt first. If it continues then you have bad alternator bearings. and alternator should be replaced

There are at least 2 belts that I know of. All I can think of when you say 'squealing' is that a belt may need replacing.

The belt or tensioner is either bad or another component being driven by that belt.
