Through my experience and the fish I have I wouyld say the most hardy are mollies and penguin tetras.
Neons are easy to keep once established in the tank. When you buy neons you can almost gaurentee you will lose some. Now days they get highly stressed very easy and tend to die with in 1st few days. But if your lucky enough to have a good mature tank and get them settled then they become pretty hardy. I bought 10 neons and only lost 3. My tank is well established. Cory cat fish are pretty hardy also.

wow, people seem to have missed the part about EASIEST tropical fish...by far the easiest tropical fish are neon tetras or beta fish. they are both fresh water so the tank is easier to maintain than a salt water one, and they require very little maintainance. a water change once a week and a feeding once every 2 days. trust me, easiest fish!!!

I am keeping 2 guppies (1 male/1 female) in a 2 1/2 gal tank. Also a catfish, to help clean tank. The tank was set up in September.
I have heard guppies are hardy, and of course catfish are.
I am guessing that b/c the tank is small, although I see displaying going on, there have yet to be young ones. Eventually I will get a bigger tank but this is a good arrangement for now.

It depends what you mean by easy. If you mean to care for in general the easiest are the bettas, tetras, plecos, bala sharks though they grow very large, and cory cats. Some that are easy to feed are Angelfish-very agressive feeders, bettas again, oscars, and gouramis. There are many more but too much to mention all. Also the easiest are cichlids, bettas, tetras, and guppies.

I'm assuming by tropical you mean salt. If this is the case then I would have to say Damsels.
However if you are talking fresh water and are not interested in goldfish. Then your best bet would be cichlids. Keep in mind both Damsels and cichlids are aggresive fish. You should choose what other fish you will add to the tanks carefully.

I like the Gourami. There are many varieties and they're pretty simple to deal with.
