Because of the restricted (in confidence) nature of Australian TFN's (tax file numbers) they are highly protected and you cant just go look it up on the internet.
Assuming you are talking about an Australian TFN.. you will need to apply to the ATO using the specified form and sending the required "proof of identity" documents. The link to the appropriate information is:

I'm not sure that you can. You could try the official ATO website. Other than that, I think the only way to get it back is to apply directly to the Tax Office (possibly download a form from the ATO site).
