Not much, unless you are at a Hundred Yen or 'Hyaku En' shop. Then you can buy all sorts of things that are only 100 yen each! (105 yen with tax.)You can buy beauty products, food, bags, sometimes clothes, etc.

Considering that it's roughly equivalent to 90 cents US, you'd be surprised how much you can buy. Japanese McDonalds have a 100 yen menu. Even better, in most areas you can find little hole-in-the-wall noodle restaurants serving giant bowls of steaming soba or udon for only 100 yen around lunchtime. An extra 100 yen will buy you a couple skewers of grilled chicken, pork, or squid to go with it.

Then, as others have mentioned, the ubiquitous 100 yen shops in Japan put to shame American dollar stores with the breadth and quality of their merchandise. I've bought everything from umbrellas and USB cables to dishes of fresh fruit salad all for 100 yen each.

There is a lot of talk about 100yen shops, and the supposition is that you can buy things for 100yen. Actually, you can't. Actually you have to pay 105yen (that is sales tax). And for some things, 100yen shops are not the cheapest place to buy some things. For example, there is a snack food that I love called "Magic Flakes" and I used to buy them for 105yen from the 100yen shop. But I found it at the local supermarket for 96yen (tax included)

So, to answer you question, mainly, you can only buy small stuff like pieces of candy and pencils, erasers, etc. Most of the food and snack foods you can get for 100yes is imported from 3rd world countries, so some people consider them a little questionable.

Hope that helps.
