Thats a hard question.I think its easier to start listing what I think ruins a song before I am able to make definitive advances towards exactly what makes a song good.
But anyway, off the top of my head, Id say a good vocalist is a must, even if the lyrics are mediocre at least hearing them sung well is great.
I like songs with guitars that seem to move and flow. Its the songs that sound stiff that dont get me going.
If its got a layered sound I like it too.A lot of things going on that flow together.
The tempo changes, doesnt matter if its a sudden switch or a gradual switch, as long as it changes. Some songs are fine using one continuous beat, but a lot of them suffer because its stale and repetitive.
Thats all Ill list before I write a book on the subject.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond is particularly gradual languorous and drawn out, identical to a well make out consultation must be. That's why it is viewed well for that cause, such a lot Floyd songs are honestly. MA: few matters beat sucking a Girl's face off to "Nights In White Satin" through The Moody Blues

I think a song needs a good rhythm and vocals fitting this rhythm perfectly. Also I think that the vocal should be catchy.

I think what a good song needs is a rocking bass, intense drums, and an awesome guitar. The words dont matter as much to me. As long as you can understand most of them and they aren't all evil and stuff, i like it.

The arrangement will make or break a song: for instance, too much repetition (whether vocally or instrumentally) may drone a song into your brain, but it won't make you like it (I hope). Variation shows versatility and thoughtfulness.

Good timing, not too boring, not too over the top, and also the music as well as the singing should make you say, "Wow" all whispery like the Windows Vista commercial.

if you would review all great songs, you would notice that it has one common thing-the main riff is simple and it shouldn't be hard for people to like it... and almost all of the great songs are lovesongs/ballads...
even heavymetal bands do it...they call it metalballad...-- there's one song by the kiss--beth... it hit the charts and its a lovesong... so play it simple...
