Zoologists knew that the clouded leopard in the islands exists, but no one knew that the island one is so very different from their mainland cousins. They have physically visible differences as well as 40 genetic differences. Thus they declared that Clouded leopards found on Sumatra and Borneo represent a new species.

Scientists already knew the clouded leopard existed; however they just recently found out that it is a seperate species.
