They were made to be red in the early 20's for safety purposes. Like for kids to know that it is off limits to open one.

Because its a goverment conspiracy man
Get all the toolboxes to look the same so we wont know whos is whos
And then we can sue people for stealing ours
When really its theirs
Its totally just get lawyers abuncha money

I never really thought about it. It's true though, up until a few years ago most high end tool boxes were only available in red.
Now they can be had in red, maroon, orange, blue, green, black, and a hideous shade of yellow.

Red was the original color when metal tool boxes first became popular. Of course now blue is not rapidly gaining share. There are other colors too, but red remains popular.

I don't know for sure but I'm guessing that historically it was a good combination of visibilty and relatively cheap paint, the same as fire engines. Besides, it's a great macho color.
