This depends upon the jurisdiction in which you live and what "public" place it is. In Alaska, it may not be exposed AT ANY TIME. In Alabama, however, it may never be completely concealed, even though you have a "conceal carry" permit. Read your permit carefully. Also, a vast # of "public" places do not allow firearms EVEN WITH A PERMIT, including police officers. Schools are such a place in most states.
