I have an Emerson DVD recorder that accepts both DVD-R & DVD-RW discs, lately, every time I insert a DVD-RW disc, The screen reads: "Cannot record on this disc." even though it's a blank disc.
Btw, I do keep the player / recorder clean, & I do not record disc to disc, I only record whatever movie or show comes on the TV. (DirecTV)

Have you try new DVD-RW disc? maybe the old one has problem like dirty or scratch, that makes the recorder can't read/write.

I would try a different brand.
Make sure also that you don't use a disc with unsupported read/write speed capability.

ARE YOU SURE YOUR NOT USING DVD+RW AS APPOSED TO DVD-RW. ALSO YOU MAY HAVE TO FORMAT THE DISC FIRST.
