I don't read much fiction but the one author who I have read all her books is Adriana Trigiani. She is a great writer and her books aren't to mushy at all. A couple have made me cry.
I would start with the Big Stone Gap series. Also good are "Lucia, Lucia", "Queen of the Big Time" (I cried at both of those endings) and "Rococo" was just a hoot!!!!!

I think John Updike may be the most skilled writer in the English language in the last hundred years or so. If you're not familiar with his work, start with "Pigeon Feathers (and Other Stories)".
