Through a "magical" process called "photosynthesis". Plants absorb water and other nutrients through their roots and carbon dioxide (CO2) in their leaves. With an appropriate amount of sunlight the water and CO@ combine to form all sorts of wonderful complex chemicals.

To the science nerds reading this: I know I left out a lot of data, I'm just trying to give an overview! :0)
