I have had him for over 9 years, he stills eats and swims fine but the growth is getting larger by the day. My red devil and african chiclid seem to be fine

This could be one of two things, fungus or Columnaris (aka mouth rot disease). The most likely cause is columnaris bacteria because of the location. To be really sure though, look closely at the spot. Is it really round or does it have a bit of a rough edge? Is it white al the way across or is it reddish in the middle? Columnaris is round and can often have a reddish area in the middle of the patch.

To treat fungus simply use an over the counter fungus treatment from the pet store and it should clear up within 5-7 days.

To treat columnaris requires antibiotics. Maracyn or Furanace are the best choices. This is best done in a separate tank as the antibiotics will kill the beneficial bacteria in your tank and require you to cycle the tank all over again at considerable risk to your other fish. You can use a large plastic tub or even a plastic trash can to treat the infected fish.

Treat as per the package directions for 10 days. Be sure to change water every day (about 50%) and feed the fish lightly during the treatment to prevent the build up of ammonia that would only put your fish at greater risk. Keep an air stone in the treatment container to aid in circulation and aeration as well.

Personally, I would plan on the columnaris treatment and if it doesn't see to help within a few days add the fungus treatment to it. That will insure you have corrected the problem.

Best of luck with it!

It sounds like he has Mouth/Body Fungus. This can spread rapidly and kill him, begin treatment right away.

I used Melafix to help my fish. Also look for Maracyn and maracyn 2.

you should check your ph balance in your tank, you might also need to get some melafix and treat your tank...my silver dollars had a lip growth and the ph was wrong in the tank...then one developed an ulcer on his side and i used melafix and it cleared up.
