It is because of people (like Howard Stern) and websites (such as http://www.votefortheworst.com ) are rooting for him, pulling in many supporters... mostly as a joke.

Oh god I'm glad that someone else has good taste! This kid sucks like noone has ever sucked before. He totally can't sing, and has an even worse stage presence! This makes America look so incredibly stupid. Even Randy, Paula, and Simon can't stand him-you can easily tell that on the show!

He sings so low that nobody can f***ing hear him and the producers have to turn the mic up to make it sound decent...he looks like prince...and by the way, he walks like a fag and his teeth arent even white so it makes his phony smile suck
