not all thongs are uncomfortable like that. you probably got one of the string thongs though. and also no panty lines is a plus to wearing one.

How to Wear Thong Underwear
You're ready for a change in the underpants department. You've heard about the benefits of wearing a thong, including the absence of underwear lines, but are you truly ready to take the plunge? Do not worry, with a few simple steps, you will be a veteran.
Steps
Buy your first thong. Look for something that's simple and comfortable. Avoid lace this time (it can be itchy). Instead, look for a nice plain cotton thong.
Bring it home. Don't try a thong for the first time in an unfamilar place, as this could make you self-conscious.
Open to expose the interior with leg holes open, and lay it on your floor, with the bum strap pointing towards you (as it would go on your body)
Step into the leg holes and pull them up.
Adjust the front side until it is at a comfortable height and pull up the backside until the bum strap lays flat against your backside.
The tricky part is to get used to the fact that part of the underwear will be wedged between your cheeks. It should not feel tight and cutting, but lay smoothly.
Buy more thongs to wear for each day of the week.
After a month or so of wearing thongs every day, you will become so comfortable with your thong and no other style of underpants will do.
Tips
Be sure to buy a thong which fits you well. A thong that is too small will cut into your body which will put a serious damper on your thong experience.
In Australia a thong is called a "g-string". If you ask for a thong the shop assistant will send you to the footwear department!

Its really your decision if you want to have panty lines or not, some people dont even care about the panty lines they just like wearing them because they can say that they do.
For most people, it does feel like a wedgie all day long. Some get used to it, some dont. I dont have a problem in the front, back its wedgieish, but if you really feel that uncomfortability i say give it up and just buy less tight panties.

Unless you are in a profession that REQUIRES you to make sure those panty lines don't show, toss the thongs.
They cause infections, chaffing and go against every natural instinct we have - to protect that area when sex isn't the activity! My OB/GYN rants about them continuously.
One time a woman I work with on occasions made a comment how she it gets on her nerves that "all these women showing their panty lines.."
My response: STOP LOOKING AT MY A**, WOMAN!
Most men don't notice or care (unless you wear one to bed..then it will be considered a bonus). It's women that made up this concept.
Good luck and toss the stupid things out.

There are infections caused by the thong so I stay away from that. It's easher to wash and bleach white cotton to prevent against infections and they come in styles like shorter or french cut.

If you're having that many problems you may want to look into getting a different size. They make many different styles of things with different widths in the back, as well as seamless ones that are no-show. Try Victoria's Secret Secret Embrace - their thongs are seamless and super comfy. You can check online for proper sizing.
