I know rainbows are influenced by several factors (time of day, can't be overcast, etc.)--I just wondered how common (or uncommon) they are.

Depends on your location. Many times, it is right place right time. If you get a rain shower, sun is low in the sky, you can get a rainbow anytime of the yr. I saw one in New Years Eve Day just east of St. Louis, MO. I may see a couple a yr or 20. Just keep your eyes opened & you will be surprised

Not rare at all - in fact, you can make your own on a sunny day in your yard, with a garden hose with a spray nozzle.

You're probably wondering more about natural rainbows though. They're still not rare - and why would they be. They can be seen anytime there's precipitation nearby and a relatively low sun angle, say mornings or afternoons. Think of how many rainstorms there are in the world every day, and how often the sun can peek out of the clouds during that rainfall. Quite often, really.

not rare at all!

After it rains, you see a rainbow. When you water your lawn with the hose, you can see a rainbow. Also by waterfalls, very beautiful.

All that a rainbow is, it's the color spectrum being shown. sunlight hits the water droplets and when you look at it at this, you can see the sunlight hit and bounces slightly in a different angle and that's when you see a rainbow.

Where I live there are lots in Spring and Summer.
They are supposed to be rare in the desert, but I've seen them there , too. It depends on the raindrops and the angle of the sun in relation to where you are located.
