Yes of course you can feed them Lettuce.Make sure it is washed though (CAUTION!!! To most people, 'lettuce' still means 'iceberg' which is a big NO-NO. Use dandelion greens--very high in calcium and vitamin A--and escarole & endive & ok, romaine--all good sources of calcium, and none carrying iodine-binding substances like the cruciferous veggies or calcium-binding substances like spinach.)
Heres a list of other foods they can eat to maintain a healthy diet.
Good food: earthworms, nightcrawlers ,redworms, mealworms ,whole feeder goldfish (occasionally), snails, butter lettuce (wash well) or melons and other fruit (find out what your turtle likes),
tofu, banana, strawberries, peas, kibbles,
Reptomin, Tender Vittels. Blueberries, dandelion
flowers and leaves, vegetable scraps from your kitchen, tomato, cooked sweet potatoes, mulberry leaves. Just expiriment. You'll find they enjoy MANY diffrent foods.
Do not feed Tubifex worms. Do not feed raw chicken, because of salmonella
in the chicken. Cooked (boiled) chicken is OK. (Freezing will not destroy salmonella.) Feed organ meat sparingly, if at all. Shrimp, ocean fish, squid, can be fed occasionally.

If this is a sea turtle it is an endangered species and will not survive kept as a pet. Contact your local Zoo or Aquarium, or University if either are not available. Even a Diamond-Backed Terrapin, which is not officialy a "sea turtle" but lives in brakish waster, has very little chance of survivng in captivity and is a species on the protected list. enature.com can provide you with illustrations and descriptions of turtles to help you identify your find.It can also give you advice on care and feeding. Please, if you do discover this little one is a Sea Turtle, get help returning it to the wild. Sea Turtles are fighting a losing battle for survival and need all the help we can provide.

1st, you really need to think about releasing it. Wild-caught turtles make rotten pets. They stress out, are usually full of worms and parasites that will affect them under stress, often never really get used to a captive diet, and may have been illegal to catch in the first place.
2nd, you really need to identify the species to find out the best cares. Try the World of Turtles gallery at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com for help.
3rd, for most species, good quality turtle pellets are a better diet than lettuce. In fact, plain head lettuce is not a good food item for any turtle, and barely useful for humans.
When you do your research, you will find that turtles need big tanks, lots of filtration, tank water heaters, good lighting, etc. It often takes about $100-200 bucks to set up a good habitat to make a happy turtle.

well if it is freshwater... does it have red on the sides of it head?
u can feed it lettus, grapes that are pealed, earthworms , blood worms, turtle pellets that u buy at pet store, pealed carats.
if it is a water turtle he will must likely only eat in the water so u have to have enough water in your tank.
PS in case you don't know they nead dechlorinated water, and relatively warm about 76-86 f, and a place where they can get outta the water and bask in a heat lamp

If you just found the turtle outside, please return it to its natural habitat! You won't be able to provide a wild turtle with the food it it accustomed to eating to survive.
If it is a pet, I would suggest looking into floating aquatic turtle pellets. You can find them at petco or any other pet store which sells reptiles or reptile products.

you need to find out what kind of turtle first. reptomin, red worms, meal worms, and yes veggies, spinach is way better for them than lettuce. some turtles are more vegetarian and some are straight carnivores.
