The primary reason is the number of miles versus the number of customers. In cities hundreds of people occupy a square mile while in rural areas the number may be less than twenty.
Wire, poles, maintenance, distance to installation and repair sites. All of these factor in to the costs. And the prices are not regulated in rural areas.

Good Luck

There are two types of Internet. 1. Narrow band (Dial-up) and 2. Broadband (DSL, Cable and Satellite). Broadband is a hardware based service where an infrastructure has to be in place to provide broadband service, usually around a 2 mile radius. In other words, every 2 mile radius there must be an expensive infrastructure in place. Therefore, if the subscribership is low, it is cost prohibitive for ISP's to service these areas. So for now you might try a dial-up service, which is more reliable, secure and cheaper than broadband any way. There are several ISP's that provide dial-up service. I would recommend a company called SpeedQwest. They have a heck of a hi-speed dial-up service unlike anything else I have ever used. You can check them out at www.speedqwest.com

I'm guessing, but I would think that customer density and cost come into play. It is cheaper (per customer, per mile) to lay cable in the city because of the population density. Rural areas would have less customer density per mile and therefore is more expensive (per customer) to connect so the broadband provider will have less incentive to connect qucikly.

There are wireless broadband services in may areas now. Don't ignore them too.

Good luck.
