What is the known weapon in U.S.A history (besides guns & atom bombs)?
Something that is handheld, wielded for one-on-one combat, something that can be used in fighting combos, like a melee type.

Bayonet. You can attach it to a rifle or use it separately in a melee. Dangerous tool of the trade.

In any event, the first weapon that comes to mind is one with a long and rich history attached to it. A Bowie knife!
