Natural selection is a consequence of evolution. It is what determines how a species evolves. Those species that develop a trait that helps in their survival are naturally selected to survive. For example, let's say bright red caterpillars get eaten all the time because they can be spotted from a mile away by any hungry bird. Through evolution (i.e., genetic mutation) a green caterpillar evolves that perfectly matches the leaf he's crawling on. That caterpillar produces other green caterpillars. The red ones get eaten, the green ones survive. Natural selection in action. And not getting eaten it's pretty darned important (to the caterpillars anyway).

Evolution is just change at the population level. That's it.
It is easy to produce change in domestic animals by selective breeding.
Natural selection is the description of how that same process can happen in nature. Instead of human breeders selecting who gets to breed, and who gets culled, nature does the selection ... hence 'natural selection.'
fastest73torino: Please keep answering evolution questions! You provide a wonderful illustration of what happens when you put your fingers in your ears every time the word "evolution" is mentioned in school. You come away thinking that evolution turns dogs into penguins. (Hint: It says no such thing. Hint 2: Expressing a position you disagree with in absurdly wrong ways, just so you can call it absurd, is called a "straw man" argument.)

the different solutions so some distance are maximum magnificent. surely there have been various theories of evolution formerly Darwin - the ideal nicely-known became by using a guy suggested as Larmarck, who thought that characteristics obtained for the period of a creature's lifespan must be exceeded directly to its offspring - so, as an occasion, giraffes won their long necks because of fact they stretched them over many generations. This concept is now discounted for the main area. Darwin became the guy who realised that the main rationalization for evolution became organic determination, ie small adjustments deliver approximately creatures being the two extra or much less nicely tailored to their environments, and the extra useful-tailored might stay to tell the story extra useful and leave extra descendants. besides the fact that if he even have been given some issues incorrect, the learn of evolution right this moment could be in keeping with this perception.

Evolution is a blanket term. A concept that I think means that change takes place and this change has some net direction in response to environmental forces.
Natural selection is another broad term but not as wide as evolution. I cannot recall if Darwin separated sexual selection from natural selection. But natural selection is a contributor to evolution.
When I think of natural selection I think of lower organisms that change in response to their environment by positive random mutations that are preserved.
People respond poorly to this because of our long lifespan. Humans seem to be fast-track, much too fast to be acted on in this way. I think sexual selection is a big part of human beings progress. Basically marrying well, staying out of trouble and being good has its benefits.

What relationship? Oh, you mean the theory that says we are nothing but animals therefore we can't be held responsible for our own actions? How else can some dumbass sue a restuarant for said dumbass spilling coffee on themself and win millions of dollars? If you mean that natural selection makes a white dog hide in the snow better than a black dog so he don't get eaten, i'll agree. If you mean that natural selection combines with evolution to turn the black dog into a penquin because penquins love the cold, your living in a fairy tale world. Why are you trying to compromise natural selection, which might happen, with a religion like evolution that can't happen?

Well its all about survival of the strongest. The weaker ones in a gene pool will die off when faced with more than average obstacles (ie; food shortage, severe weather, illness). Sometimes mutated genes save species that normally wouldn't survive. So the weaker die off, the stronger survive and keep reproducing, slight gene mutations change the survival chances of the new gene pool and then the stronger reproduce again, evolution. I believe humans haven't evolved in the past few hundred years because of the way our society is built. If you are weak, the strong will take care of you, and the weak are still able to reproduce. I do find it interesting to note that many anthropologists agree that most of the human race was on the average, shorter than they are today. (The taller people won fights, were granted positions of power, more ability to reproduce with more mates... models? )

Natural selection is important to evolution, because it is one of the components of evolution (the other 3 being gene flow, genetic drift, and gene mutation). In other words, natural selection is one of the 4 reasons why evolution occurs.

Because the genes of the strongest are the only ones to pass on.
You should read some Darwin. It isnt exactly a page turner, but what he talks about is how certain characteristics of certain animals appeared in the animals that were best at survival.
Think of it this way. If a group zeebra were born all white, what chance would they have running around the african wild? What chance would an all orange tiger have at sneaking up on prey?
so evolution is the process by which genes favorable to survival are passed on. you survive and your children will have the ability to survive based on your success at surviving. You dont survive and the chances of you having children that survive (or having children at all) greatly decrease their chances of surviving.
