An additional thought. I think Desmond lied to Charlie. I really think Claire is the one he's been saving, not Charlie. Charlie was no where near Claire when Desmond shot the gun to scare away the birds.
He was saving Claire, not Charlie. Claire is the one destined to die.

Charlie would be so obvious though. It'd be like, hey look, Charlie died just like we were told he would. There's no shock there.
I think that Nikki or Paulo will die. Or maybe that is just wishful thinking.
