I started a new job a few weeks ago. I now have to be into work at 7:00 am and have to begin getting up around 4 to leave in time. At the job I had prior, I worked nights and graveyards, so I have become accustomed to staying up during the night. I have been having A LOT of trouble both getting to sleep and then waking up in the morning. I am averaging 3-4 hrs of sleep a night and I am concerned about the affect it is going to have on me with my job, relationships and health. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You are right. 3-4 hours sleep a night is not enough. In order to get up at 4 in the morning, bedtime should be about 8 pm.

Try listening to nature CDs of rain or forest sounds to soothe you into sleep. Avoid eating or drinking coffee or tea before bed. Keep the bedroom dark and cool and shut off any night lights.

It is hard to become used to a new schedule but it will happen. Try not to worry about it too much.

Get on a schedule. First, there's no such thing as sleeping late on weekends to "catch up." If you get up at 4 on a work day, get up at 4 on the weekend. If you find you're tired, take a nap in the middle of the day. Your "body clock" recognizes it's the middle of the day and doesn't get confused.

I admit I rely on caffeine to get by on some work days and alcohol to slow me down at night. But, usually, a good workout and reading for half an hour in bed is enough to get rid of the stress and clear my mind for sleeping.

I used to work third shift and had the same problem. Most of what I learned a doctor told me (he recommended warm milk to slow you down, not alcohol, but who drinks that?) Anyway, I've become a master of the power nap and can get well rested with a 20 minute nap after work.

Make yourself go to bed at a time that will allow you enough sleep to feel rested when getting up at 4. Even if you aren't tired then, if you keep on that schedule, your body will adjust in a few weeks.

Work for your self.

Get up when you want

Do what you want

Stay up late whenever you want

Go to your kids school events and weekend sports games.

It all comes down to choices. You choose to stay there doing that or find your self a teacher and ask them to show you how to change for the better.

All the best to you

Massive doses of caffeine may help. I have been going to work in the early morning for years and I have never gotten used to it. So dont believe the poster above me.
