i heard something a few years ago that said that all South generals statues point north saying that someday they'll return.

As a general rule this is true, but it is not absolute. When one travels through cities and towns in the South it is very common to see a statue in the city square of a Confederate soldier (they are very rarely of a general) and yes, the usually do face North.
