HI, 300 in my opinion is possibly the best film that I have ever seen! It didn’t get the best reviews, which to me, is very strange. I think that it has many parts that can be interpreted in different ways, and i have a question about one of them, it may not actually be a question, but more of an opinion.... here’s the question:

When the Spartan king, King Leonidas, throws the spear at the man who refers to himself as the god of all gods, and the spear goes through the earrings on his cheek and rips them out...................... what is this showing?
My thoughts are one of these:
A. King Leonidas actually missed, showing that the Spartans were not perfect
B. King Leonidas missed porously to show him that he was not god, and the he could bleed
C. King Leonidas wanted him to live to see the final battle when they are defeated.

I understand that this question may be 100% opinion, but im still very curious on what most people think.
Thanks! -George

King Leonidas told the Persian King that by the end of the battle he would see him bleed. He did. I think it is as simple as showing that he wasnt a god.

Leonidas told Xerxes that by the end of the battle ... even a god-king will bleed. I can't remember the exact quote but that's pretty close. It was a very long throw that Xerxes should have been able to see and avoid easily, so its chances of success from the beginning were very slim. So I think it depicts Leonidas' might in that he hit him at all, and it shows that Xerxes was just another man after all. The movie is historically weak to say the least, but it's not a historical epic, it's based on Miller's graphic novel (as all who posted here are surely aware) and as such I thought it was a great movie too.

I have to agree with your B and C answers... If you remember, when Leonidas first meets with Xerxes, he tells him that by the end of this war, he will show the people that even a god-king can bleed? Well when he rips the rings out of his face, it kinda proves that hes not a god-king. As far as B goes, Leonidas was a Spartan after all, and if he wanted to kill Xerxes with the spear, he would have. I think that he wanted Xerxes to live to see the fall of the "mighty" Persian empire. I've seen the movie two times, and i thought about A, but they themselves know that they are not perfect because they all know that they are going to die eventually because to a Spartan, the most glorious death is in battle... I guess it kind of is a matter of opinion though... I wonder if that part of the battle really happened? After all, the movie was based on a graphic novel, but it does have some factual evidence to it as well... there really was a battle at Thermopalaye, and the part when the Spartan says they will fight in the shade is an actual quote... really, its whatever you want to believe, but i agree

The answer is simple and it is not an opinion question. The answer is "B. King Leonidas missed porously to show him that he was not god, and the he could bleed." He told the Persian king that before the end of the battle the he would indeed bleed and he made that statement to prove to him that he was not a god. No matter how many people his army has killed to matter how many countries he has taken over that he was mortal just like everyone else and that he could bleed just like the rest of them and that he would one day die.

It was NOT done to show that the Spartans were not perfect because if Leonidas was to kill the Persian king then the battle would of ended at that moment since most of the army was in fact slaves and was forced to fight.

Even tho "C. King Leonidas wanted him to live to see the final battle when they are defeated." seems like a good answer also but that is not it either because it would to be till way later that Alexander the Great went and destroyed all of the Persian cities and delivered the final blow and wiped them off the face of the earth.

Well George, i also had a trouble understanding why Leonidas missed the final spear throw, but my opinion is that he wanted to show that he missed on purpose to show the "King of Gods" that he actually was mortal and could bleed. If you recall the King of Gods would brag about immortality and how he was a very generous god. Leonidas essentially told him that before he died he would make him bleed. He failed to kill him, but he proved his point. After watching the movie five times i found that your answer "B" seems correct. Greatest movie in that specific genre ever. Far better than Troy.

Thank YOu, i finally found a person that likes "300". Ok, my opinion was that B. That Gerard Butler did miss so he could show all that Rodrigo Santoro wasn't god of all gods, because gods are suppose to be immortal which he wasn't.
Saw the movie on Sunday, Wonderful. Best movie of all and i will totally buy it to help complete my Gerard Butler Movie Collection.

I don't think that he missed on purpose...but anyway even though Leonidas didn't kill him, he did what he said he would and it showed that the "god of all gods" (don't know his name) was not so almighty after all. If you watch his reactions you can see that he was apalled at the fact that he was wounded, probably thinking that such a thing like that would never happen. That's just my take, but 300 was definitely a good movie.

It wasn't a hit or miss thing at all...the whole purpose was to simply shed his blood...to basically prove that he is not a God and can bleed like anyone else. When they had their talk at the middle of the movie (God of Gods and the Sparten King) The King said people will know few stood against many and a God bled before it was over.

In my opinion its B because he want to show Xerxes that he was not a god and they best way to do that was to make him bleed. When Xerxes and Leonidas meet each other for the first time, Leonidas said something like, "before this battle is over even a god-king will bleed."

he definitely didn't miss on purpose, so he went for the kill and missed it showed that the spartans were not perfect and that the king wasn't so powerful after all.
