I would like to change jobs, but I was off sich for about 6 months. It was a serious health problem, but people are prejudiced and I am scared to jeopardize my career. I am not getting on with my boss at the moment and he might give me a bad reference.

People seem not to care about a doctors paper, they are about whether I will be off sick if working for them.
I really need to get out of my current job and find something else, but am worried that noone takes me.

You could, just say you've had the opportunity not to work for the past two years as your partner was able to support you while you pursued whatever it was you'd decided to do and now you've decided you want your independence back again and want to start earning your own cash! Just don't add your current job to your CV. Your last reference will be from whoever you worked for 2 years ago. The only hitch with this though is your P45 'cos your new firm will see your employment details but if you start work at a large firm this wouldn't be a problem 'cos you'll be a number not a face. Anyway, It's not your fault that you were ill and if your health problem's now been resolved it shouldn't jeopardize any future employment and you don't have to mention your illness to a future employer unless you're required to have a medical. Even then they will assess how capable you are of doing the job you are applying for now. As for your boss, it's illegal to give a bad reference - the worst he could do is refuse to give one which would be very unlikely. Hope this helps.

your boss is not the only one who can give you a reference, right?

about your health problem, you can just get your doctor to write a letter saying that you're 100% fit to work

Is this a job or a carreer?

You can always quit a job.

If this particular "job" is a carreer move, get advice from someone in your area, who deals with your specific field.

Hey, you can't give someone a bad reference, only no reference. If your boss gives you a bad one you can take him to court.

Your boss cannot give you a bad reference.
If he does, you can sue for defamation of character.
