If they can say competitive eating is a sport then cheer leading sure as hell is one.

Absolutely not. Cheerleading's sole function is to support sports, not be one themselves. Cheerleading competitions are just that, competitions, not sports. And yes, cheerleading does require altheticism, but that doesn't make it a sport. If cheerleading were a sport, it would have cheerleaders.
*By the way, isn't it ironic that this question was posted in a general category because there is no cheerleading category under 'sports'!

I believe that cheerleading is not a sport, although I think that the participants are extrememly athletic. Kind of the opposite of baseball, which I think is a sport, although many of the participants could stand to lose about 20 lbs.

Oh I definitely do...I remember my friends who were cheerleaders would be so tired after their practices. They do just as much work as any other sport if not more. I think cheerleaders are totally underrated when it comes to giving them credit for their athletic achievements.

YES YES YES!!!!! Let's see half of you try to throw someone up in the air and catch them safely! Or lets see you do a round off back handspring back tuck! It takes a to to do what we do, we tumble, we jump, we throw and lift people in the air, our work out is intense and more. It's kind of like football with out the sweaty guys and ball. Football has the super bowl and cheerleading has Nationals and Regionals. Each team, like in football, try to earn the top spot in these sports

Are you kidding? Cheerleading requires more athleticism than most of the sports being cheer led. Of course it is a sport. It is physical therapy for body and spirit.

no, although they do have competitions it is not really a physically gruling sport where the best can be measered with time or good stats. Its a club just like the science clubs that compete in competitions.

Yes cheer leading is definitely a sport. All the gymnastics and athletic training that goes into cheer leading is incredible.
