I didn't have the worst of my side-effects right away, but for the first 9 months (3 injections), I gained 5 pounds, started getting hot flashes (I was 17, so it wasn't menopause), and always found myself irritable after each injection.

Unfortunately, those were the least of my worries. I started having cramping (without a period), lost vaginal lubrication and elasticity, which made for painful intercourse, and developed severe depression.

I stopped back in October and went back to the pill and I've been so much better physically and emotionally. I've known women who had no trouble with Depo-Provera whatsoever, but they are the minority. Also, recent studies are showing an increase in the chances of osteoporosis after menopause in women who took the shot for over 2 years. I would talk it over with your doctor and see what method of hormonal contraception is right for you.
