Who determined that so much money was "squandered" on speeches? I'm thinking that speeches comprise very little of a university's budget. In education, from 80-83% of the total budget pays salaries. Most other monies provide for facilities, utilities, services, and (yes, probably a few speeches).
I'm sorry you don't enjoy speeches. I've heard a few bad ones, but I've also heard some amazing and very inspiring ones.
Hang in there... find a different soap box; one that matters; one that you can make a difference with.

First off Speeches are education. You get a better education when you are exposed to more ideas. Second, universities aren't about education they are about money. Speeches are great because they advertise the university and attract more paying customers and government grants.

Depends. In some cases the speeches may actually be educational and worthy of merit. In other cases, probably for noteriety. It looks good when a University can attract a certain calibre of speaker.

Apparently they have a different idea than you as to what education consists of. But hey, what do they know!!!!
I suggest if you don't like the idea of universities doing that, that you dont go to any of those universities.
