with all the time and material you would use to make a suit it's better in the long run to just buy a suit. if you're having a problem with fading i would suggest getting a polyester also known as durafast and endurance suits they won't fade or degrade as fast. they last at least twice as long as a lycra suit.

I have no idea how to make a swimsuit. I suck at sewing.
However, I just wanted to suggest polyester suits. My kids wear Speedo Endurance swimsuits to practice everyday and they never fade. Nike also makes good polyester suits. Lycra suits stretch and fade in a month or two and I will never buy one again. Poly suits can last for years, they're amazing. They may cost a little more, but will save you LOTS of money over time. Check out swimoutlet.com, E-bay (sells new suits with tags still on) or your local swim shop. You can buy grab bag poly suits for $39.95 or discounted suits for around $49.00. This is cheap considering they will last at least one year.
Added info: Don't buy cheap suits at Target or Wal-mart as some people suggest. The material and stitching is completely inferior and will only last a month or two if you use it daily.

Oh, try getting an expensive swimming suit for like 90 dollars then, take all your old suits, like 2 put them on, cut and tye them were they are faded, and save them for practice, but if your like competiting or showing or something then use the expensive one! Hope this helps, ggod luck, and I don't think that you can make your own swimming suits but give it a try! Good luck!

You can buy a pattern at any JoAnn Fabrics store and many WalMarts (although they are phasing out) or from www.sewingpatterns.com. Making swimsuits will not make them last longer though. Professionally manufactured suits have much better construction than the ones you can make and they also last longer due to high-grade lyrca/spandex and polyester they use.
Good luck!

If you're needing suits for practice, Ross, Target, TJ Maxx, or a number of discount stores will sell good stuff for about $10. I get Speedo and Nike for about that much.
If you need them for performances because they need to last longer and you're having them professionally made... I'd look into a company that makes/sells patterns.
Search Google with: sewing patterns swimsuits
You'll find a lot of stuff.
