I had heard that in the final stages of our sun's life it's size is predicted to expand beyond earth's orbit. If it does earth is toast. It's not supposed to go beyond Mars though.
I recently heard that there is now some question as to whether it will expand beyond the orbit of the earth. It depends on how much mass the sun throws off between now and then. The more it throws off before it's inevitable expansion, the smaller it's expansion will be when it dies.

We all know that the final fate of our sun as a star is a white dwarf for ever. The fate of sun can be summerised as followings a) Hydrogen burning phase - 10.6 Gyr , b) First Red giant phase -1.3 Gyr, Helium burning phase 100 Myr, d) Se cond Red giant phase 20 Myr e) Unstable pulsation Phase 4000,000Yrs F) Planetary nebulae phase 10,000yrs and g) White dwarf lastly for ever. We are in Hydrogen burning phase of our sun. What is not konwn very well what will happen to this earth in First Re d giant starphase. the sun will engulf its all planetary system as it will expand. How long this earth will be habbitable for men? 500 million years more What will happen to this earth as the temperature will fall down? Ice cold age will reappear

5 billion years from now, the sun will have used up its hydrogen fuel and will start expanding into a red giant. It will likely engulf Mercury and Venus, but will probably not get big enough to engulf the Earth. But the heat and radiation from this bloated star will incinerate our planet, and likely damage the planets further out as well.
By that time so many billions of years in the future, we will either have destroyed ourselves or we will have moved on.
Plants and animals won't survive, but the human race (whatever it is by that time) may.

Yes, the sun will grow to be gigantic and engulf the earth, and then settle down into a white dwarf star. No, no one will survive this. Fortunately, this is 5 billion years from now. There's a very good chance no one will be around to survive this.

the sun will go like this
yellow!!>red GIANT>white dwarf
and there r 2 theories.
1. the sun will engulf all inner planets.
2. While the sun Expands, the earths orbit will also expand and the oceans will boil over, we die and earth is just a rock and it will cool at the core and become dead.

From what I understand that is not supposed to happen until several thousand years from now. By that time with the advances in technology and if mankind is still around they should be able to pack every body up and move to another solar system.
If they decide to do like Noah and the Ark, I sure hope they leave the mosquitoes and the cockroaches behind.

When the sun runs out of hydrogen and begins to burn helium, it WILL grown to the size of Earth's orbit, or very slightly short of it. Either way it will be enough to scorch the B-Jesus out of Earth. Luckily, by then we will be advanced enough to have been long gone when that happens. Party in Andromeda!

These are all good earthly answers that I have read, and they are all basically correct in a very elementary way, based upon the knowledge you Earthlings have amassed so far. I know the answer. I want to answer your inquiry. And I admire your inquisitiveness. But the answer will have to wait, as it really has no impact on the lives of any of you reading this right now.
As for you, Katy, I think it might be better if you refocus on more earthly matters. Live long and prosper.

when the sun dies it will expand into a red giant, engulfing the earth, which will kill everyone. but this is still billions of years away, so don't worry, the sun is still in its mid-life stage, a normal star.
