It doesn't have to be "in" Canada, I just want to make some money work for me while I continue to work myself.

Canadian Mutuals stink. Mining has been hot but it is full of scammers-too risky, and may now be at it's peak. Real estate is hot but near the peak. With the price of homes in the city doubling in the past 5 years, a couple points on interest could sent it crashing. Lumber has been soft, though. Timbered acreage is still cheap in some places. Forest company stock might have some opportunities.

A man who already has $2 million to invest must have some prior knowledge of what to do with that kind of money. How did you make the money in the first place? Is it clean money? I would suggest that instead of contacting a site like this for advice that you select an Investment representative from the firm Edward Jones and use their expertise and your own expertise to decide what to do with your money. Edward Jones people are better than the banks or insurance companies, who are only interested in making money for themselves. Don't go into mutual funds---the fees do not make it worthwhile. If you want to invest in real estate Canada is not the place right now---better to go to the USA or where it is warm---great demand for warmer clime housing over the next 10 to 20 years.
