Division Meaning?

I want to understand the meaning of divisions bett like (8A-AAAA) or (7-A) or (6-AAA). The more a's the better or worse.

Well, I assume this is in regards to high school sports.
School Divisions are decided by population of the school, it is expected that the more students you have to choose from, the better at sports your school will be. However, the quality of the team really has nothing to do with that. But, 8A champs would be respected higher than 1A champs. (More A's and Higher Number= More Students) Also, usually teams of higher A's are better than lower A's because of coaching/# of athletes.
